Alstroemeria psittacina 'Variegata' - Variegated Peruvian Lily
Family: Alstroemeriaceae | Origin: Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay
This plant has colorful and special tubular flowers, but it is worth growing especially because of the beautiful variegated leaves that light up dark corners in the garden.
From a creeping subterranean rhizome rise almost bald stalks bearing rosettes of painted leaves in shades of green with white margins. The plant forms a delicate, bright and spectacular round-wide cushion.
It is a winter active plant that emerges from the ground in the Jerusalem area around September and already in October it can reach a full and impressive size. In late spring, at the same time as the leaves dry up, it grows tall flowering stalks bearing beautiful and special flowers at their tops.
This flowering occurs only if the plant grows under a lot of light. Each tubular flower consists of petals, the bases of which are pink and the upper part is greenish and dotted with crimson spots. With the drying of the flowers, the entire plant disappears for about three months and then awakens again.
Variegated Peruvian Lily likes good enriched soil in the garden and is excellent in a container or in a hanging basket under full or partial shade and with regular watering. Under these conditions it spreads and covers small areas quickly and will easily fill any container.
It is a long-lived plant (like most plants that spread by underground stolons) suitable for creating a bright spot in front of green bushes, for covering small areas and as an accompanying filler for standard shaped shrubs or in a mixture of plants in large containers.
This is a special ,showy, bright and beautiful plant suitable for many corners in the shaded garden, taking into account the short dormant season in the summer.
