Euryops pectinatus – Golden Shrub Daisy
Family: Asteraceae | Origin: South Africa
Marguerite Daisies, which originate from the Canary Islands, and African Daisies, which originate from South Africa, have been occupying a growing place among winter flowering plants in recent years.
Many use them as a substitute for winter annuals and uproot them in the summer, but in fact they are compact and successful perennial shrubs.
From South Africa, which is a wonderful kingdom of flora and a source of many excellent gardening plants, comes another Daisy relative that looks like a Marguerite Daisy in every way, but is much larger and more robust and has a very long flowering season.
Golden Shrub Daisy is a medium-sized shrub with a rounded structure. The pinnately dissected leaves have a slightly grayish tint thanks to the white felt found in the leaf axils and on their undersides (These are not mealybugs).
It is unique in its abundant flowering with large yellow chrysanthemum flowers and in the long duration of flowering that surpasses any other chrysanthemum – 7-8 months continuously from October to May- with this spectacle of radiant flowers, it warms and illuminates any winter garden.
The Hebrew name of the plant is a good translation of the foreign name, which refers to the yellow flowers that look like large eyes and the leaves whose shape resembles a comb.
As mentioned, it is a sturdy and long-lived plant, which loves the cold but is also relatively resistant to heat, dryness and neglect. It grows well in full or partial sun and even under partial shade with regular or little irrigation (after a year of establishment).
This bush reaches a height of 80 cm or a little more and a diameter of 100-120 cm and barely requires any cleaning or pruning, but it can be kept dense and more compact by partial pruning every year after flowering has ended. Be careful with strong pruning, especially in the warm season, and if you must reduce its size considerably, prune it heavily but gradually in the fall or early spring. One may also occasionally clean up dried flowers.
Golden Shrub Daisy is very suitable as a focal shrub in the garden, in combination with summer flowering plants, in a mixed shrubbery and for covering areas, even in public gardening.
It also does well in large containers with excellent drainage and, due to its symmetrical structure, even combined in a formal garden.
These Daisies can be planted all year round and outside of summer you can almost always find some flowering plants in the nursery;
So If you want a long-flowering and reliable shrub for the garden, this one is a great choice.
